On June 21st, the longest day of the year, we present the culmination of months of engaging with the community along the Nolensville Corridor to create a vision for the neighborhood and how we can bring resources to enhance the community through the arts, safety and transit. We hope you will join us!
10 am – 4 pm Inside Out participatory mural creation for Casa Azafrán with Oz Arts and JR.
Join us as we create a community mural featuring the faces of Casa Azafrán and the community. Inside Out murals have been installed all over the world, so it’s pretty amazing that Nashville and Casa Azafrán have been chosen to participate! It will be a fun experience—you get to have your photo taken, watch it print immediately and participate in hanging it on the building. Please plan 5 minutes out of your day to be part of this exhibit (or longer to stay and watch the fun!).
Artist JR began his global participatory art project, Inside Out after winning the 2011 TED Prize and being asked to articulate a wish to change the world. In a truck-traveling photo booth, people have the opportunity to share their portraits and, by extension, their stories. Each setting has a unique theme—Nashville’s is “inclusion,” transforming messages of personal identity into works of public art.
Participants will also receive free entry to OZ Arts Nashville festival on Friday or Saturday. At the OZ Arts festival you can enjoy art exhibitions, music, food trucks and an additional mural installation on the side of the OZ Arts building that will feature photos from the three sites (including Casa Azafrán)!
2 pm – 3 pm Opening of interactive art exhibit from Conexión Américas’ ENVISION NOLENSVILLE PIKE project
Funded by the Kresge Foundation, ENVISION NOLENSVILLE PIKE maps out –literally and figuratively– the aspirations and dreams for the Nolensville Pike corridor as expressed by residents and business owners during community gatherings. Conexión Américas presents ENVISION NOLENSVILLE PIKE in collaboration with the Nashville MPO, Nashville Civic Design Center, Transportation for America, several metro departments, and local artists.
Join us for a 30-minute program from 2:00-2:30 pm and explore the ENVISION NOLENSVILLE PIKE exhibit in the Casa Azafrán Art Gallery. Listen to oral history interviews with longtime South Nashville residents and current Glencliff High School students. View and comment on neighborhood vision renderings. And, of course, make sure to stop by and be part of the Inside Out mural being created for Casa Azafrán that day.
