SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, the Museum Curatorial Assistant is responsible for assisting with professional museum curatorial and registration duties. An employee in this class collaborates with collections and registration staff in the management of the State of Tennessee collection. This class differs from the Museum Curator and Museum Assistant Registrar positions in that an employee of the latter performs duties that are independently led or coordinated.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Responsible for adhering to museum standards set forth in the State Museum’s Collections Management Policy and other state policies in performance of job duties.

2. Assists with artifact management through building object records, numbering, imaging, cataloging, and housing.

3. Assists with the creation of condition reports, environmental reports, acquisition reports, artifact inventories, and accessioning reports.

4. Assists with the preparation of exhibitions, research, publications, presentations, and other curatorial activities.

5. Assists with the handling, storage, and transport of museum objects in accordance with best practices as set forth by the State Museum’s Collections Management Policy.

6. Assist with the research of the permanent collection using primary and secondary historical sources to be applied to State’s collection artifact records, as well as potential acquisitions to identify, authenticate, and assess their appropriateness for the State’s collection.

7. Assist with the development of content for online and temporary exhibitions including writing interpretive texts.

8. Assists in preparing responses to public inquiries regarding State’s collection as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. Preferred degrees include History, Public History, Art, Art History, Archaeology, Museum Studies, or Library Science.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying experience in professional or paraprofessional museum work, including assignments related to historical sites; the maintenance of library collections; and/or the instruction or research in art, history, or museum science may substitute for the required education to a maximum of four years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Complete a background clearance application which includes releasing all records involving any criminal history and a valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Ability to lift and move objects more than 50 pounds.

The salary for this position is $3,197 – $3,300 monthly, plus state benefits.
